8 Tips For Choosing The Right Cosmetics

Finding the right products can be very overwhelming so one of the most important things to know is your skin type.  By knowing this, you can rule out the majority of other possible options, and the task of finding the correct products becomes less daunting. For example, if you have oily skin, you will know to only look for products that are oil-free. Here are a few useful tips to help you in your search!

3. Invest in quality makeup

Quality makeup can sometimes be painful to the bank account I know, but as well as usually working out to be a better investment, the quality does show on your skin. Make-up of lower quality can cake or slide on the skin and isn't likely to blend as well.  It tends to sit on the skin’s surface, giving a less than natural look which is not usually the goal. If possible, opt for good quality cosmetics that aren't necessarily super expensive, these days there are many mid-range brands who have great product lines.  Isn’t it better to invest in yourself by purchasing quality makeup that you know will look great and last longer, than to waste money on products that you’ll have to replace and that just won’t work for you?

6. Oily Skin

For oily skin, use an oil-free primer before applying a matte type foundation that won't clog your pores. Try using a loose powder as it tends to have fewer oils than pressed powder. Blot the skin periodically throughout the days to remove any shine.  Some cosmetics brands have blotting powders specifically for this which makes it handy to carry around during the day for quick touch ups. Avoid creams for eyeshadow or mascara and creamy style lip pencils, as these will have a lot less longevity on the skin.

7. Combination Skin

For a combination skin, you can either choose different products to treat specific areas on the face e.g. an oily forehead and nose, or you can select products that are specifically created for combination skin. Even so-called ‘normal skin’ often has areas that are either more or less oily than other areas. Someone with a normal skin may also have times during the monthly cycle when it is also oilier or drier than usual. If this is the case, it is worth investing in that extra one or two products on hand to be used as and when needed..

1. Avoid cosmetics that dry or irritate your skin

How do I do this?. Well, one easy way is to research and read reviews before purchasing a product. When doing this, make sure to read reviews from people with a similar skin type as yours and if you do purchase a product, make sure to test it on one small part of the body such as on your wrist. Wait for 24 hours to see if you experience any irritation before using it fully.

2. Consider your skin tone

Even if the make-up is perfect for your skin type, choosing the wrong colour - one which is either too light or too dark, will make the finished look less than attractive. Select cosmetics that complement and match your skin tone and you’ll find that minor imperfections in tone and texture will disappear. As a general guide, darker foundations, deeper colours in eyeshadow and eyeliner will be best suited for those with dark or olive skin tones. On the other end of the spectrum, if you have pale or fair skin, you should opt for lighter shades of foundation and softer eye makeup. Remember, the golden rule is that make-up should enhance your look and never overpower it.

4.Dry Skin

If you are the victim of dry skin, don’t despair.  Try using a liquid foundation and if using a concealer opt for one which is cream based.  It is also best to use a pressed compact powder and avoid loose powders or oil- free formulas as they tend to settle in any small lines you may have. Eye make-up is best achieved with silk-textured powder or creme eyeshadows and your eyeliner should be either a shimmer pencil or a soft matte type. When it comes to lipsticks and lip glosses, moisture is the key. Find a moisturising lipstick and use a lip-gloss that has ingredients such as aloe or vitamin E, both of which will help to infuse as well as protect the lips.

5. Sensitive Skin

For sensitive skin, look for products that are labelled specifically for use with a sensitive skin and avoid any fragrances in your products. Non-allergenic is another phrase to look out for on the labels. The key is to also avoid anything with high dye levels or lots of preservatives.

8. Cleanser options

Whilst we may have all the right make-up products for our skin type, it is also super important to ensure that we are taking good care of our skin before any application of make-up. Always look to avoid harsh or drying cleansers, as well as greasy cleansers since either extreme, can react unfavourably. The best skin cleanser, regardless of your skin type is a water-soluble cleanser.  That way, you’ll know it will always be gentle on the skin and the perfect preparation for a great looking make-up!
