7 Steps to A Successful Wardrobe Edit

We can all be guilty of an overflowing closet and still feel like we have nothing to wear. I always feel a great time to edit your wardrobe is at the beginning of each season.

Although this may seem like a daunting task, use this guide to help you organise exactly what in your wardrobe you need, and what you need to remove, recycle or donate to charity.

1. What’s the end goal?

The first thing to keep in mind is the purpose of the edit. Have you had a lifestyle change or started a new job or are you mindful that many of the items you have accumulated just don’t excite you anymore? Have you gained weight or lost weight? All these factors will have an impact on the items you keep and the items you remove.

2. When’s the last time I wore this?

We all have those days when we go shopping and make the decision to buy something which we’ve fallen in love with, only to bring it home, hang it in the wardrobe and never look at it again.

All is not lost. When completing your edit, take another look. Is it something that you’re excited to wear all over again? If so, keep it, if not, it’s time to say adios! If it’s been over 12 months since you’ve worn the item, it may be that it’s not needed anymore. Consider giving them to a charity shop, selling or disposing of them.

3. Try It On

If there are items that you haven’t worn in a while or you’re not quite sure how you feel about them, the best thing to do is to try them on. You should get a good idea how you feel in them. Do they make you feel good? Do you feel confident? Are you excited to wear them? If yes, they’ve made the cut. If no, then it’s time to say goodbye!

4. Dress for the season

This is also a great place to start if you’re feeling overwhelmed. What items do you need for the season? Are there any specific occasions that you need to dress for? Will you be going away on holiday? If there are items that you don’t currently need consider packing them away to make your wardrobe uncluttered and user friendly.

5. Colour Coding

Now that you’ve got rid of any clutter, a great way to arrange your clothes is by colour. You’ll find this really useful when you need to put an outfit together quickly.

6. Arranging Your Wardrobe

Wouldn’t it be great to be able to put an outfit together with ease? Arranging your items in order of garments e.g. dresses, trousers, tops will help you plan out and put your outfit together with ease.

7. Time For Some Shopping

Now that you’ve gone through the previous steps your wardrobe should be looking in great shape. There is however a final step that you may need to consider. You should now have a clear idea of the items that you have and be able to identify any areas which may need some further attention. Make a note and identify any areas where you feel you need to make additional purchases. For example, you may find that you have half a dozen black skirts, but actually only two jackets, both of which are of a similar colour and style. Once you’ve made that very precise list, you can slowly start looking to fill those gaps.
